THE HISTORY OF TATTOO IS HARD TO RECOUNT EVENTHOUGH IT’S AN ANCESTRAL PRACTICE WE CAN’T PLACE IT’S ORIGIN
Penetration of the occult: historical background, psychological, physiological and spiritual risks.
History of tattoo
Antiquity of tattoo
Tattoo goes back to 2000 bc. this practice was familiar to musicians and dancers of the egyptian “middle empire” area. The mayas in pre-columbian south-america, the amrican idians (some tribes) knew tattoo. Romans and greeks were great users of tattoo: they would mark their smaves with it to recognize them. Slave trader of africa, america and middle east also used it.
Universality of tattoo
So tattoo is used in almost evry place at any area of history but mainly in defined social groups: sailors, slaves, prisoners, pirats, privateer, bourgeoisie and even nobility.
Tattoo is not always voluntary: antiquity’s slaves or (closer to us) deportee of the nazis death camps. They were tattooed by their masters to make them understand they didn’t belong to themselves anymore.
Ornamental, religious, magical tattoos are found in japan on the samourais and the mafia, in burma, north africa mainly berber tribes. Some show the membership to a family a tribe or even secret society, link with spiritual power(demon, pagan divinity). For exemple the star with five stings on the face means “i am god and i heal by the force of satan”
handmade tattoo (amateur)
those amateurs can’t draw. their work is caricatured and grotesque. those who adorn those tattoo are rebels with deep family problems. They feel bad with themselves and have a low educational level. We can see those tattoos on young delinquant that show they are “tough”. In a certain way they engrave their rebellion, hatred, feeling of injustice and desir of vengeance they feel.
*handmade tattoo professional
their are professional tattooers working without machines
machinemade tattoo pro
pro tattoo artists works with machine and they earn they live thanx to this art. their art is vast and the subject numerous: lanscape, painting, dragon, flowers, women, portrait, demon, violence, erotism, pornography. Nowadays tattoos can be adorned by workers, bourgeois, noble people, policemen, mafia memeber. it’s obvious taht tattoo is not a mark of viloence.
spiritual aspect of tattoo
biblical approach of tattoo
“you shall not make incision in your flesh for a dead, you shall not print faces on you”
the goal of this this banning from god is to keep israel in it’s holiness. in fact god don’t want its people to get lost like th eother peole. GOD IS HOLY. He wants to keep its people in a cleanliness of body, soul and spirit so they stay communion with him and can taste his infinite love.
If god don’t want his people to prostitue to the idols and pagan practices, it’s because he wants to preserve them. God don’t want his people to fall under the spell of the prince of darkness: SATAN!
spiritual impact of tattoo
On a spiritual level, you have to know that tattoo link us to power of darkness. One doesn’t engrave with impunity on his body demon faces, magical signs, dragons, skulls, snakes, chains. One must not play with such signs!
If sometimes those tattoos look christian(cross) they stay forbidden. For this kind of tattoo we call (consciouslly or unconsciuoussly) occult forces that chain up our souls and mind. Some think they can stop after one or two tattoos but in fact an inside voice makes us going on and on fon tattoos. one becomes alienated by the occult powers.
Psycological risks
Tattoos about rebellion reinforce our tendancies in this domain, to the point that we identify with them. It’s true for tattoos expressing violence, vengeance. Thos link to the occult chian up people in spiritual world that goes against god.
exemple: “i have on my forearm a flower. i called it “thought to my mother” unfortunately i failed this tattoo. Under alcohol i covered it with another flower. In between the two tattoos i made unvoluntarily a lion. THis lion freaked me out to madness. i could see him open and close its mouth as if it wanted to bite me, it happened everytime i used drugs.
this exemple lived by someone makes us say taht tattoo can lead to madness
Pagan roots of piercing, branding, and scarification.
For the enthusiats of tattoo piercing is a logical following. IT has lost it’s nonconformist value as its well spread in society.
The perforation of an organ, even to put jewell is not harmless. Not in more in primitive people than for teenagers in our postmodern society. In a society that is lacking spiritual values each new generation creates its own rites. In a materialist society where science prevails on religion, where the body is sacred. We are far from the initiation marks of the savage society but the magical aspect of piercing is still here. testimony “piecring is a psiritual experience that taugh me to diferenciate body and soul. it’s gives a peace within, the strange feeling to going back where you comr from”
3 groups got piercing back in fashion
1-The punks
It’s hard to imagine that in 1975 this gang of teens in the suburb of london will creat a movement very political, creative that will influence music, design, fashion cinema.
Kings of the DIY, they creat clothes with imagination and cynicism: torn clothes, SM stuff, studded leather, dogs collar, nappy pin in the chik and ey brows, swastikas and not to forgetthe rat on the shoulder!
On the contrary of the hippies that claimed a natural way of life, punks adorn the trashes of the consumption society: a way to deny its values. Piercing suggest that savagery is not in the primitive society but in our! its also a reference to everything that choks our bourgeoise society at the end of the XXth century such as: perversions, obsenity, rebellion, violence, self denial…
2-The neoprimitives
In our western countries this term poins out a group of extremists anthusiats of ancient body modification: piercing, tattoo, branding. they claim their link with the primitive societies.
In the 1970’s on the west coast of the US a small group of individuals (some fom the sadomasochist community) shares the same intersts in body modifications and rites of some savage tribes; but also for the “bizarre”. They initiated the “clean” version of piercing as we know it%. As people want them piercing st-udios are opening in europe and in the US.
On the contrary of the punks who expressed dispair via piercing, the neoprimitives consider it as an enrichment: emotional, spiritual and sexual. The point is to make out of the body a work of art sanctified by the blodd and strange stigmatas.
3-Fetichists and sadomasochists.
Since a certain time fashion is using apparels and agressive imaging of sadomasochism: body closely fited in leather or latex suit, thighen in corset, decorated with pierings or tattoos etc…
The domination outfit ahs left dunjons, psychatric asylums to go into fashion shows where signs of pathology or considered as “chic”.
The fetichist trend is the heir of three revolutions. The first is the feminist movement of the 1960’s that reject the concept of “women-object”, the second is the homosexual movement who forces to rethink sexuality and spread the androgynous style. And finaly in the 1970’s the fashion world get inspired by pervers eroticism and all the sadomasochist imaging. The main point of sadomasochism is that it avoid power struggle between men and women by substituating it by the duality domination/submission, master/slave, wich is not determined by the sexs.
Branding
It is to mark a design or a symbol with burning iron on the skin. This kind of marking is not new it was used to mark criminals and slaves. In france wa would brand criminals with a lilly on ths shoulder so that they would be out forever of the civilised world.
their was a “come back” of branding in the years 1920’s/1930’s in some fraternity as a sign of allegiance to the organisation. this practice still exists and a lot of celebrities (especially black ones) like michael jordan, emmit smiths or the reverend jesse jackson got their skin marked with greek letters.
Scarification
the trend was “back to the roots!” and to ethnical fashion so coming from the darkest ages here’s scarification! the ultimate provocation?
In europe this practice exited bc and lasted until the middle ages in some regions. It is still present in africa, in the vilages but alson in towns for the elder generation. It is basically an ethnical sign of acknowledgement. this encestral practice is identitary, medical, religious, social and easthetical. Those scars are considered firts of all as beatifull it’s also a sign of courage they also behold a magical power.
One of the french pioneer of scarification tells us:” this is tribal; that show shows a change in your innerself. It’s a deep modification, psycholically talking thats the meanig of it, some even change their name after. it’s to go forward. We were expecting people with a tribal culture. we got some tattooed peolpe but with time other peole came. ive done scarification to people that weren’t tattooed or pierced but scarification was part of a personal quest to them. its not only ornamental its mor rough
